The Future of Aerospace Skills—ASG TGM's Commitment to Developing Talent

At ASG TGM, based in Preston, nurturing next generation talent is a priority as the company
continues its mission to shape the future of the industry. Managing Director Sarah Stephens is
passionate about bridging the gap between young people and meaningful careers in aerospace,
stating the importance of apprenticeships as a viable and rewarding pathway.

“Schools seem to promote university and further education, but that’s not right for everyone,”
Stephens explains. “Apprenticeships should be spoken about a lot more within schools and colleges
as you can train and learn without putting yourself in a pile of debt.” Her insights highlight a
significant issue in current educational attitudes. Too often, the focus on traditional academic routes
overshadows the opportunities provided by vocational training, leaving young people unaware of
alternatives that could lead them to thriving careers in sectors like aerospace.

ASG TGM is stepping up to address this gap by designing a revamped apprenticeship programme set
to launch in 2025. This initiative reflects the company’s broader commitment to cultivating
homegrown talent and ensuring that the next generation is equipped with the skills and knowledge
to excel in the aerospace industry.

Founded in 1998, ASG TGM has built a reputation as a leader in the precision machining of hard and
soft metals, specialising in 3, 4, and 5-axis machining of components up to 4.2 meters long. With
customers spanning both military and civil markets, the company holds long-term agreements (LTAs)
on key platforms in both sectors. Significant investments in cutting-edge technology underscore ASG
TGM’s commitment to excellence. In 2020, the company expanded its capabilities with a state-of-the-
art 4.2-meter, 5-axis machining centre and a new assembly cleanroom.

Stephens is also candid about the need for employers to rethink their approaches to attracting and
retaining young talent. “Employers need to be more flexible,” she says. “Young people bring energy
and fresh ideas, but they also have different expectations about work-life balance and career
progression. We have to adapt if we want to stay competitive.” ASG TGM’s apprenticeship
programme aims to address these concerns by offering a hands-on, dynamic learning environment
that prepares young people not just for a job but for a career. The programme will also reflect the
company’s forward-thinking ethos, incorporating mentorship, skills development, and opportunities
to work on cutting-edge aerospace projects.

As ASG TGM looks to the future, its focus on developing fresh talent remains integral to its mission.
By addressing the barriers young people face and creating pathways that celebrate vocational
training, the company is helping to secure the future of the aerospace industry. With leaders like
Sarah Stephens at the helm, championing flexibility, innovation, and opportunity, ASG TGM is setting
a powerful example for others in the sector. By investing in young people today, they are ensuring
that the skies of tomorrow are brighter than ever.
